Winter Warmer Wrap-up

Published Tue 16 Aug 2022

The 2022-23 session officially kicked off with the Winter Warmer event at Kurnell.  Despite some strong winds and choppy paddling conditions, a great morning was had by all, followed by a team lunch  at the local cafe.

Coaches Report

Sandy Point Dragons participated in the Winter warmer Regatta held at Kurnell on the 14th of August.

This was a great day despite the conditions being very cold and windy with choppy waters, so choppy that some of the waves were coming up over the gunwale. The crew competed across Senior A Mixed, Senior B Mixed and Senior A Opens, meeting the challenge and taking home a 1st in the Senior A Mixed Minor and 3rd in the Senior B Mixed Minor. We were very lucky to finish all of our races prior to the day being cancelled due to the escalating conditions. One boat was beached whilst another lost its sweep. The crew on that boat were quick to take charge and had the overboard sweep quickly replaced by another sweep from the crew. I would like to thank our Sandy Point sweeps, Mel and Dave, for doing a fantastic job and a big congrats to Dave on managing exceptionally well sweeping for his first regatta! I would also like thank Vicky for drumming. LIke myself, I presume Vicky is suffering drum burns from hanging on so tightly! It was not a day you wanted to go for a swim!

I would also like to thank all the crew for their great efforts on the day . Sandy Point Dragons had spent a lot of time off the water due to flooding on the Georges River and therefore had limited time for training sessions prior to race day. Despite these challenges, we put in a great effort on the day with all races being very competitive, so hats off Sandy Point and congrats!
